Japanese life, culture, & history accessible to Westerners. This part of Tokyo developed as a temple town in the Edo period, and prominent temples are found throughout the district. You will see a real life of tokyans with many restaurants, shops, Shrines, and Buddhist temples as well as learn a lot in Japanese history. We are really grateful to Mrs. Takabatake for all the competent introductory explanations and the kind of careful guidance through old Tokyo. We saw and experienced things we would have not otherwise been able to. Sachiko was a fabulous guide. We had a sweet bean “cake” before our matcha, shown how to drink the tea according to ritual, and then given another roasted green tea drink. The tour was informative and Sachiko was excellent in explaining the culture and sights. He has a nice way of making guests feel welcomed and taken care of. I highly recommend this tour to see the different side of tokyo, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. We met our lovely guide Hizuru, at Nippori station, and started our tour in the adjacent Yanaka cemetery, which is huge. On an extreme hot day, Hizuru, our guide, provided a colourful, entertaining and knowledgeable walking tour of old Tokyo. In these 3,5 hours we were introduced to quite some shrines, where we learned the differences and commonalites between the two religions. I highly recommend this tour early in your trip to get aquatinted with Japan. After the tour, she was also very helpful in providing directions in the cemetery to the family tomb of a Japanese friend. This area of town in Nippori is more “real Tokyo” than other area and she made it come alive. Yanaka is beautiful ancient town in Tokyo. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our walking tour of Yanaka, a historic area, spared during the bombing in WW Il. Her knowledge of the area and her ease of communication added much to the tour's success. The tea ceremony was amazing and we each had to choose our own bowl for the matcha tea (note, this is quite bitter) and then were given information about the ceramics (they use antiques). A few days before the tour the company sent us a photo of our meeting spot, what we were going to go see and even a photo of our tour guide.
